Language Center and UNBL Collaboration Holds Language Proficiency Workshop for Education Personnel
Borneo Lestari University held a workshop on improving Indonesian language skills through training on writing official letters on Friday, November 28, 2025, in the hall of the University of Borneo Lestari. This activity presented Rizki Amalia, S.Pd, a language instructor from the South Kalimantan Provincial Language Center, as the main resource person. The workshop was opened by the Vice Chancellor 2 for Finance and Resources, Mrs. Azmi Yunarti, S.Pi., M.Pd. and followed by all UNBL education staff.
This workshop aims to improve the ability of participants in writing letters that are standard, effective, and in accordance with applicable linguistic rules. Letter writing skills are basic competencies that affect the quality of administrative services, so UNBL assesses that this knowledge refreshment needs to be carried out periodically.
Simple sentences are also used to facilitate understanding. For example: ‘The letter must be clear, concise, and on target.’ However, this activity also reviews more complex sentence structures to show how coherence, the accuracy of the language barrel, and the alignment of the form can affect the professionalism of an official document.
In his presentation, the resource person conveyed a number of common problems in writing official letters that are still often found in educational and government institutions. Some of these include the use of letters and punctuation that are not in accordance with the EYD rules, the choice of data that is not careful, the use of non-standard terms, to the illogical form of detailing. In addition, many official letters still use intermittent sentences, wrong language barrels, and less effective forms of letters.
The resource person also emphasized the concept of effective sentences. A sentence must start with a clear subject, have a firm predicate, and follow the principle of parallelism. Participants are also reminded not to use synonymous words simultaneously in one sentence, such as “in order”, because it can reduce the effectiveness of language.
During the practical session, participants were asked to correct several examples of official letters that had been prepared by the committee. This exercise makes it easier for participants to understand the mistakes that often occur and how to fix them based on the right writing rules.
With the implementation of this workshop, UNBL hopes that all education personnel will be able to apply standard and professional letter writing in every administrative activity. This not only improves the quality of campus internal services, but also strengthens the image of the institution in the public eye.
